Dimyati: Students’ Ability in Analyzing Elements of Short Story. (A study at Semester Six Class A Students of English Education Department State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung).

This study tries to explore the students ability in analyzing elements of short story. This study also done at English Education Department Semester Six Class A Students.

The method used in this study is description. The writer used written test elements of short story, the written was given to 34 students semester six class A English Education Department as sample to set information about the students’ ability in analyzing elements of short story.

Findings show that 0.97% are able to answer question number 1, 0.76% are able to answer the question number 2, 0.64% are able to answer the question number 3, 0.23% are able to answer the question number 4, 0.79% are able to answer the question number 5, 0.5% are able to answer the question number 6, 0.55% are able to answer the question number 7, 0.47% are able to answer the question number 8, 0.85% are able to answer the question number 9.

It can be concluded that they are 3% of the students are not able to answer the question number 1, 24% of the students are not able to answer the question number 2, 36% of the students are not able to answer the question number 3, 77% of the students are not able to answer the question number 4, 21% of the students are not able to answer the question number 5, 95% of the students are not able to answer the question number 6, 45% of the students are not able to answer the question number 7, 53% of the students are not able to answer the question number 8, 71% of the students are not able to answer the question number 9.

The conclusion is having done the data analysis and presentation of study findings, now I am going to describe some conclusions and recommendation regarding main topics of this research as follows:

  1. The students’ semester six English Education Department State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung still get difficulties in analyzing elements of short story, it can be seen from the research findings there are many students who are not able to answer the question correctly; it is identified by percentage of students’ false answer for each item.
  2. The percentage of students ability in analyzing elements of short story result shows that they are 3% of the students are not able to answer the question number 1, 24% of the students are not able to answer the question number 2, 36% of the students are not able to answer the question number 3, 77% of the students are not able to answer the question number 4, 21% of the students are not able to answer the question number 5, 95% of the students are not able to answer the question number 6, 45% of the students are not able to answer the question number 7, 53% of the students are not able to answer the question number 8, 71% of the students are not able to answer the question number 9.
  3. Some causes make students difficult in analyzing elements of short story are sometimes students doesn’t like read fiction (short story or novel) and doesn’t want to try analyzing its by them, and the lack time allocated by the English Education Department especially on the study of elements of short story or novel.
  4. And things should be done to help students to overcome their difficulties in analyzing elements of short story are students must read, analyze fiction (short story or novel), and allocation of the time should be added by English Education Department.
