Listening Section
In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken English. There are four parts to this section, with special directions for each part.

Part I. Pictures
Directions: In this part of the test, you will see a picture in your test paper and you will hear four short statements. The statements will be spoken TWICE, and are NOT WRITTEN out in your test book, so you must listen carefully. You must choose one statement – A, B, C, or D – that best describes the picture. Then, on your answer sheet, mark your choice.

Look at the picture below and listen to the four statements.

A. The clock is going to be sold.

B. The clocks are hanging on the wall.

C. It’s time to wake up.

D. It’s time to sleep.

Choice (B) – “Theclocks are hanging on the wall.” – best describes what is seen in the picture. Therefore, you should mark (B) on your answer sheet.

Let’s begin with question number one.

A. The children are getting on the bus.

B. The children are getting off the bus.

C. An old woman is boarding the bus.

D. The bus is stuck in traffic.

 PART II. Questions and Responses

Directions:In this part of the test, you will hear several questions spoken in English followed by three responses, also spoken in English. The questions and responses will be spoken TWICE. They will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers are saying. You have to choose the best response to each question.

Now listen to a sample question.

You will hear          :                Man     : I’m having trouble in English class, what should I do?

You will also hear  :                Woman            : A. Everyone is speaking English.

B. The class is clean.

C. I could try to help you.

Choice (C) – “I could try to help you” – is the best response to the question, “I’m having trouble in English class, what should I do?” Therefore, you should mark (C) on your answer sheet.

  1. I’m very dizzy and I also have a stomachache.

A. You better not go to work today.

B. You can get cough syrup at the drug store.

C. Why don’t you check your pulse regularly?

  1. Would you like to use my computer?

A. Sure. It’s quite heavy.

B. Yes, if you don’t mind.

 PART III. Short Conversation

Directions:In this part of the test, you will hear several short conversations. You will hear the conversations TWICE. The conversations will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers are saying.In your test book, you will read a question about each conversation. The question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

Now listen to a sample question.

You will hear: Man       : How often do you study English outside the class?

Woman : Twice a week.

Man       : Good for you. I prefer to study at the Art Center.

Woman : That sounds like a good place to study.

You will read: Where is the man’s preference to study?

A. At home.

B. At the Art Center.

C. At the office.

D. In Kuta Beach.

Choice (B) – “At the Art Center.” – is the best answer to the question “Where is the man’s preference to study?” therefore, you should mark (B) on your answer sheet.

Now let’s begin with question number 7.

  1. Woman : Morning sir, may I help you?

Man       : I’m looking for sport magazines.

Woman  : They are in the isle two at the back. Next to the greeting cards.

PART IV. Short Talks

Directions: In this part of the test you will hear two short talks. Each will be spoken TWICE. They will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand and remember what is said. In your test book, you will read two questions about each short talk. Each question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

Questions 11 to 13 refer to the following procedure.

How to make Teh Tarik or pulled tea.

The Tarik is simple enough to make at home. First, add four tablespoons of black tea powder to boiling water. Then, allow tea to brew for five minutes. Next, filter the tea into a separate glass, then add two tablespoons of sugar and four tablespoons of condensed milk, stir well. Take two big glasses and start pouring the tea from one glass to the other. Make sure that you pull it as high as you can. Stop when you achieve the desired foamy texture. Finally, serve hot in a clear glass.
