Penggunaan Penghubung Who dan Whom – Relative pronoun/pronominal penghubung adalah pronomina yang lazim menghubungkan satu klausa dengan klausa berikutnya.

Contoh 1

  • Students who study in the middle east must know Arabic
  • Everyone who studies in the middle east must know Arabic

Contoh 2

  • He was the only person whom representatives elected president
  • He was the warrior whom representatives elected president

Dalam hal apabila klausa pertama berupa orang yang menjadi subjek, maka relative pronoun-nya  who, sedang apabila ia orang yang menjadi objek maka relative pronoun-nya whom. Kalimat everyone who… dalam contoh 1 diatas merupakan contoh penggunaan relative pronoun who yang berarti “setiap orang yang akan belajar di timur tengah harus bisa berbahasa arab.” Sementara itu, kalimat He was the only person… dalam contoh 2 diatas merupakan contoh penggunaan relative pronoun whom yang artinya kurang lebih “dia adalah satu-satunya orang yang telah dipilih sebagai presiden oleh para wakil rakyat.” (Baca juga: Penggunaan -ing Pronomina Kepemilikan (Her misunderstanding him))

Selanjutnya, perlu dimaklumi bahwa dalam percakapan sehari-hari dan dalam tulisan-tulisan popular penafian who dan whom itu sudah sangat lazim. Contoh: 1) the only woman who is reliable in her lifetime is her mother menjadi the only woman reliable in her lifetime is her mother (satu-satunya wanita yang dapat dipercaya seumur hidupnya adalah ibunya); 2) the man whom you met at my house yesterday is a psychologist, dapat menjadi the man you met at my house yesterday is a psychologist (lelaki yang anda temui di rumah saya kemarin itu adalah seorang psikolog)
