Pernyataan Pilihan (Would rather) – would rather sama artinya dengan prefer to, like something better atau choose something rather than something else, yakni lebih suka memilih/lebih menyukai sesuatu tertentu daripada sesuatu lainnya atau singkatnya lebih suka.

  • I would rather not study Japanese

kecenderungan pemakaian infinitive seperti i would rather to study english atau pemakaian -ing seperti i would rather studying english hendaknya dihindari jika bermaksud mengungkapkan pilihan seperti dalam konteks contoh 1 diatas.

  • Sarah would rather that he taught her German
  • Sarah would rather that he didn’t teach her chinese

disamping digunakan dalam konteks waktu present, would rather juga dapat digunakan dalam konteks waktu past dengan pola kalimat seperti contoh 2 diatas. selanjutnya, kata that dalam contoh tersebut lebih baik diartikan jika dari pada itu atau bahwa kendatipun dua arti terakhir ini lebih sering dipakai dalam kamus-kamus inggris-indonesia.
