Pertanyaan di Akhir Pernyataan (I am…, aren’t I?, etc) – Pertanyaan-pertanyaan di bawah ini disebut tag questions, yakni pertanyaan pendek yang ditambahkan pada akhir pernyataan yang sering tak banyak mengharapkan jawaban dan si pendengar.

  • He/she was late yesterday, wasn’t he?/ wasn’t she?
  • He/she isn’t late again, is he?/is she?
  • Tino/tini doesn’t take the class, does he?/does she?
  • You/they took the class, didn’t you?/ didn’t they?

Jawaban yang diperlukan (jika diharapkan) adalah “yes” apabila tag-nya negative dan “No” apabila tag-ya positif. Contoh: “we’ve met before, haven’t we?”. “yes”. (kita pernah bertemu sebelumnya, bukan? Ya.) tag questions selalu diselaraskan dengan subject, verb, dan tense yang digunakan. Namun, perlu diperhatikan bahwa jika pernyataan dalam sebuah tense (mis: past/present/future) positif, maka tag-nya harus negative. Demikin pula sebaliknya

  • I am good at English, aren’t I?
  • I’m not good at English, am I?
  • You have to take the class, don’t you?
  • We ought to take the class, shouldn’t we?
  • Let’s (let us) begin the class, shall we?

Contoh 3 dan diatas merupakan kekecualian. Dalam hal ini, perlu dicatat bahwa tag question untuk I am bukan …, am not i? melainkan…, aren’t i? selain itu, pengecualian juga berlaku untuk have to, ought to dan let’s. perhatikanlah contoh 4! Selanjutnya, singkatan semacam she’s mungkin merupakan kependekan dari she is atau she has bergantung pada bentuk verba yang mengiringinya. Kalua verba yang mengiringinya verba -ing maka she’s berarti she is (seperti: she’s writing). Kalau verba yang mengiringinya participle maka she’s berarti she has (seperti: she has written). Adapun singkatan seperti she’d. apabila verba yang mengikutinya berbentuk present, makai a berarti she would (seperti: she’d write him), sedang apabila berbentuk participle makai ia berarti she had (seperti: she’d written him). Perbedaan kepanjangan dari singkatan-singkatan ambigu tersebut tentu saja memerlukan ketelitian tersendiri dalam menentukan taq question-nya masing-masing.
