Listening Section
In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken English. There are four parts to this section, with special directions for each part.

Part I. Pictures
Directions: In this part of the test, you will see a picture in your test paper and you will hear four short statements. The statements will be spoken TWICE, and are NOT WRITTEN out in your test book, so you must listen carefully. You must choose one statement – A, B, C, or D – that best describes the picture. Then, on your answer sheet, mark your choice.

Look at the picture below and listen to the four statements.

A. The clock is going to be sold.

B. The clocks are hanging on the wall.

C. It’s time to wake up.

D. It’s time to sleep.

Choice (B) – “Theclocks are hanging on the wall.” – best describes what is seen in the picture. Therefore, you should mark (B) on your answer sheet.

Let’s begin with question number one.

  1. Look at picture number 1.

A. The woman is reading a book.

B. She is playing guitar.

C. The man goes rock climbing.

D. She is weight-lifting.

  1. Look at picture number 2.

A. They are riding the bicycles.

B. The bicycle is parked along the beach.

C. The bicycles are on the ground.

D. Two people on a tandem bicycle. 

  1. Look at picture number 3.

A. They are all wearing red ties.

B. The woman has the same height.

C. The man in a blue shirt is bald.

D. The woman on the left side has kinky hair.

 PART II. Questions and Responses

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear several questions spoken in English followed by three responses, also spoken in English. The questions and responses will be spoken TWICE. They will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers are saying. You have to choose the best response to each question.

Now listen to a sample question.

You will hear          :                Man                  : I’m having trouble in English class, what should I do?

You will also hear  :                Woman            :           A. Everyone is speaking English.

B. The class is clean.

C. I could try to help you.

Choice (C) – “I could try to help you” – is the best response to the question, “I’m having trouble in English class, what should I do?” Therefore, you should mark (C) on your answer sheet.

  1. What do you think of your new boss?

A. He has a lot of work to do.

B. He’s really smart and creative.

C. He used to work in Japan.

  1. How about some strawberry ice cream for dessert?

A. I’d love to have some but I’m on a diet now.

B. That would be a perfect fruit dressing.

C. That sounds like a great place to visit.

  1. How do I get to OMama Caféfrom here?

A. It’s not too difficult to find one.

B. Go straight and you will see it beside the music studio.

C. Follow this step carefully.

 PART III. Short Conversation

Directions:In this part of the test, you will hear several short conversations. You will hear the conversations TWICE. The conversations will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers are saying.In your test book, you will read a question about each conversation. The question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

 

Now listen to a sample question.

You will hear: Man       : How often do you study English outside the class?

Woman : Twice a week.

Man       : Good for you. I prefer to study at the Art Center.

Woman : That sounds like a good place to study.

You will read: Where is the man’s preference to study?

A. At home.

B. At the Art Center.

C. At the office.

D. In Kuta Beach.

Choice (B) – “At the Art Center.” – is the best answer to the question “Where is the man’s preference to study?” therefore, you should mark (B) on your answer sheet.

 

  1. Man : Rani, is the audio visual room available this afternoon?

Woman  : I think it is available, but let me check first.

Man       : Thanks, because I have some important clients that will come this afternoon.

What is the man going to do?

  1. Woman : I’m sorry, but concert tickets are already sold out.

Man       : Why aren’t there any tickets left?

Woman  : Many tickets are allocated to various pre sale outlets. If I were you, I would buy them there.

What does the woman suggest that the man do?

  1. Man : I just looked over the brochure you wrote for our newline of digital cameras. It’s not quite on target.

Woman  : Well, it’s only the first draft, Mr. White.

Man       : I get it, but could you make it less technical? People don’t like terms they can’t understand.

Woman  : OK, I’ll get right on that when I’m finished with the newspaper advertisement for our new DVD player.

What is the woman planning to do next?

  1. Woman : I wonder why The Lebon Restaurant went out of business. It’s got a great review in Rumah Makan magazine.

Man       : It’s not closed permanently. There was a fire in the kitchen last month, but they plan to reopen as soon as the damage is repaired.

Woman  : I’m glad to hear that. It was one of the best spots in town and the food is so delicious.

PART IV. Short Talks

Directions: In this part of the test you will hear two short talks. Each will be spoken TWICE. They will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand and remember what is said. In your test book, you will read two questions about each short talk. Each question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

Questions 11 to 13 refer to the following procedure.
