Verba Transitive dan Intransitive Verb yang Sulit (Raise, rise, etc.) – Kata-kata yang berhuruf miring dalam contoh 1 dibawah ini merupakan transitive verb (verba transitif).

Contoh 1

  • Heavy rain raises the water level of the river every year
  • Heavy rain raised the water level of the river last year

Contoh 2

  • The water level rises when it rains every day
  • The water level rose when it rained yesterday

Verba transitif adalah verba yang memerlukan komplemen (complement), yakni pelengkap yang memberi keterangan mengenai subjek atau objek yang ada dalam sebuah kalimat. verba raise-raised-raised berarti meningkatkan sesuatu, bukan meningkat.

sementara itu, Verba intransitif (intransitive verb) seperti rise-rose-risen seperti dalam contoh 2 diatas berarti meningkat. verba semacam ini tidak memerlukan komplemen. jadi, kalimat The water level rose yesterday artinya kemarin ketinggian air itu meningkat (air itu semakin banyak).

Selain raise (meningkat/mengangkat/meninggikan) dan rise (meningkat/naik/bangun), masih cukup banyak verba yang sering membingungkan dalam pemakaiannya, antara lain: lay-laid-laid (meletakkan/menempatkan); lie-lay-lain (berbaring/terletak); borrow-borrowed-borrowed (meminjam); lend-lent-lent (meminjam/meminjamkan); intransitif say-said-said (berkata); dan transitif tell-told-told (berkata/menceritakan). dalam menghadapi kemiripan-kemiripan ini, kita harus menerapkan diksi (pilihan kosa kata) dengan cermat agar kecenderungan memakai verba-verba khas tadi secara serampangan, dapat di hindari.

Incorrect:

  2. our teacher said us how to do the homework
  3. he lays on the sofa to rest every day after work
  4. the teacher told that we were making progress
  5. the postman lies the mail on the table every day.

Correct:

  1. would you please lend me your pen?
  2. our teacher told us how to do the homework
  3. he lies on the sofa to rest every day after work
  4. the teacher said that we were making progress
  5. the postman lays the mail on the table every day.
